- Coastal and Marine Conservation

Advanced Ageing and Sexing of Passerines with Peter Pyle, May 19 - 23, 2008

Please join the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) and Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS), in cooperation with the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP), for an advanced ageing and sexing of passerines workshop on May 19-23, Monday - Friday, 2008. Peter Pyle, IBP Biologist, and author of The Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part I, will be the primary instructor. The action-packed week will consist of presentations, study of specimens, field mist-netting, banding, and processing at multiple locations on the central coast of California, and field trips to renowned birding locations. Participants will be trained in a synthesis of methods pertaining to identification, ageing, and sexing of landbirds in the hand and in the field. Participants should already be familiar with bird handling and basic mist-netting and banding techniques. Cost is $750 ($650 early registration, by April 7th). Breakfasts and lunches are included; lodging not provided. The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in a partnership with these scientific institutions: Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of California-Davis, University of California-Berkeley, and the Carnegie Institution for Science is a new multi-organizational institute of world-class facilities and expertise located in one facility at Emeryville, California.

The goal of JBEI is to use rapidly advancing scientific techniques, such as systems and synthetic biology, to accelerate development of the nation's biofuels industry.

JBEI's goals focus on breaking the barriers to efficient conversion of lignocellulosic material into biofuels. The team is establishing a highly integrated research center aimed at engineering plants for better processing, efficient protocols for pretreatment and optimized microorganisms for increased biofuels production.

We are currently looking for a start-up team of bioinformaticians, postdoctoral researchers, and technicians in the areas of plant biology, enzymology, biochemical and chemical engineering, functional genomics, applied microbiology, fermentation, molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics that will expand to approximately 150 staff by the end of summer 2008.

Besides, JBEI (through LBNL) is currently looking for scientists and technicians interested in working on the various aspects of biofuels research, especially in plant cell wall synthesis, deconstruction and microbial engineering. Final Call for Papers: Remote Sensing of Terrestrial Carbon Fluxes and Vegetation Biophysical Properties

Special Paper Session for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG), April 15-19, Boston, Massachusetts

The estimation of carbon fluxes between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere has important scientific and political implications. Remote sensing has proven a valuable tool for directly or indirectly estimating terrestrial carbon fluxes at landscape, regional, continental, and global scales. Remote sensing is also effective in estimating vegetation biophysical properties including vegetation biomass, leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover, and phenology that are explicitly used for estimating ecosystem carbon fluxes in empirical approaches or process-based biogeochemistry models.

This session will focus on the use of remote sensing data and techniques for estimating ecosystem carbon fluxes and vegetation biophysical properties at various spatial and temporal scales. This session will include, but not limited to, the following topics:

(1) Scaling-up site-level measurements on ecosystem carbon fluxes (e.g., eddy covariance measurements) to regional or continental scales using remote sensing data;

(2) Quantifying ecosystem carbon fluxes at landscape, regional, or continental scales using remote sensing data and techniques;

(3) Detecting land use/land cover change, disturbances (e.g., fires, and insect defoliation), and extreme climate events (e.g., droughts) and understanding their impacts on regional carbon budgets by combining remote sensing and other techniques;

(4) Estimating vegetation biophysical properties including vegetation biomass, LAI, fractional vegetation cover, and vegetation phenology at landscape, regional, or continental scales using optical or microwave remote sensing.

We also encourage submissions simulating ecosystem carbon fluxes at regional or continental scales using empirical or biogeochemistry models driven by remote sensing data (e.g., vegetation indices, LAI, vegetation phenology).

Call for Papers: Climate Change and Place

Climate change is already transforming the physical, ecological and social configuration of places across the world, and the meaning and experience of place is also certain to change significantly. What defines the character of places, and how can their design respond to the shifting climate?

In a special theme section of its issue to be published in August 2008, the journal Places invites scientists, essayists and designers to engage in a discussion of the impacts of climate change on the diverse dimensions of place and the role of design in minimizing its impact on human and ecological wellbeing. We are interested in explorations and reflections as well as examples of practices, real design schemes, and places that have responded to climate change. The themes for the special section range from the impact of climate change on places that support biodiversity and human wellbeing to how climate change and resulting biophysical changes alter our perception and meaning of place.

In our role as a forum of design for the public realm, we ask: What are the implications of climate change and its impacts on the experience of place? How can planning and design best respond to climate variability and help us adapt to the changes to come? We welcome a variety of contributions, including: Reflections and explorations on how climate change may affect the multiple dimensions of particular places (max. 2000 words). Research essays that respond to existing and anticipated effects of climate change on the biophysical and social dimensions of place (max. 3000 words).

Dispatches or project reports that describe significant events or examples of design that address climate change at a variety of scales (max. 1000 words). Contributions should include compelling, high-quality graphics. In addition, photo or graphic essays of places shifting as a result of climate impacts may also be considered.

Deadline for submission of two-page proposals: November 1, 2007.

Deadline for completed manuscripts, following initial selection by editors:
January 15, 2008.

Deadline for final revised manuscripts, following peer review and revision:
May 1, 2008

Studying Land Use Change: Determining the Environmental Impacts of Sprawl

Despite nearly stagnant human population growth in several regions of the US (such as the Northeast), human consumption of rural land continues as it is being converted to 0.5 to 5 acre suburban and exurban residential lots. This low density exurban development (sprawl) not only consumes vast tracts of prime agricultural lands, but also leads to the fragmentation and deterioration of existing habitats for terrestrial plants and animals, the spread of invasive species, and the alteration of aquatic ecosystem structure and functionality. This session will focus on illustrating and understanding the broad range of impacts on the environment, as well as potential approaches for mitigation. While presentations from the Northeast are encouraged, others will be considered.

NESCent Call for Users of Comparative Methods

The R statistical analysis package has emerged as a popular platform for implementation of powerful comparative phylogenetic methods to understand the evolution of organismal traits. The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) is organizing a hackathon focused on the integration of comparative phylogenetic methods within R. The event will take place on Dec 10-14, 2007, at NESCent in Durham, North Carolina. Having largely identified the set of developers to do the actual hacking, we are 1) soliciting applications for end-user participation and 2) comments and suggestions from the community. More information about the event is available at http://hackathon.nescent.org/R_Hackathon_1 .

We are actively seeking applications from end-users of comparative methods: biologists familiar with comparative phylogenetic methods who are interested in working face-to-face with developers to help prioritize needs, document and test the code being developed, provide feedback regarding usability, and ensure the community value of the code being written at the event. End-users need not be experienced programmers.

Mini-Symposium 6, Ecological and evolutionary genomics of coral reef organisms

Inviting you to participate in Mini-Symposium 6, "Ecological and evolutionary genomics of coral reef organisms", being held at the 11th ICRS in Fort Lauderdale, July 7th-11th 2008.

The 11th International Coral Reef Symposium science program will address scientific questions within the framework of a series of Mini- Symposia developed to address problems and issues on contemporary coral reefs that will assist management to sustain future reefs.

The central theme for the 11th ICRS is "REEFS FOR THE FUTURE". The Symposium goals are to provide a scientific basis for coral reef ecosystem management by articulating the state of the science with respect to current and emerging stressors; improve the understanding of reef condition, function, and productivity; and grow the fields of coral reef ecosystem science, conservation, and multidisciplinary research by facilitating the exchange of ideas.

We have invited four distinguished speakers to provide a broad perspective on the main questions posed by the Mini-Symposium. The central topics of Mini-Symposium 6 and the invited speakers are as follows:

1) What is the role of genome science in coral reef ecology and evolution, examples from symbiosis, bleaching, disease, microbial communities and phylogenomics? Sandie Degnan, University of Queensland
2) What genomic approaches are already available for coral reef science? Forest Rohwer, San Diego State University

The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) is organizing a hackathon focused on the integration of comparative phylogenetic methods within R. The event will take place on Dec 10-14, 2007, at NESCent in Durham, North Carolina. We are broadly soliciting applications for participation as well as comments and suggestions from the community. A hackathon is an event at which a group of programmers who otherwise do not have the opportunity to interact on a routine basis meet to collaboratively develop working code that is of utility to the community as a whole. This event will bring together different groups of developers and users of comparative methods to work towards a common set of objectives centering on common challenges of data exchange, interoperability, and usability.

CALL FOR INPUT
We are soliciting input from the community at large regarding the priorities and objectives of the hackathon. 1st International Workshop on Camelid Genetics

The 1st International Workshop on Camelid Genetics to be held the weekend of February 22-24, 2008 at The Hotel Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona. The workshop is being organized by the Alpaca Research Foundation and the Alpaca Registry, Inc.

The impetus for the workshop is the availability of the radiation hybrid map of the alpaca genome and the scheduled completion of the 2x sequence in 2007. The purpose of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for camelid researchers, veterinarians and geneticists to meet, exchange ideas and information and to discuss future priorities and collaborations. The tentative program is available upon request.

The annual Young Systematists' Forum represents an exciting setting for postgraduate students and young postdoctoral researchers to present their data, often for the first time, to a scientific audience interested in taxonomy, systematics and phylogenetic inference. This well-established event provides an important   opportunity for budding systematists to discuss their research in front of their peers within a supportive environment. Supervisors and other established systematists are also encouraged to attend.

Prizes will be awarded for the most promising oral and poster presentation as judged by a small panel on the day.

Registration is FREE. Please let us know is you wish to attend. You are invited to participate in the 12th Annual Hilton Head Workshop entitled, Regenerative Medicine: Advancing to Next Generation Therapies being held March 12-16, 2008 at the beautiful Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island. The goals of the workshop are to bring together academic and corporate scientists and their students working at the cutting edge of tissue regenerative technologies and provide an intimate forum for sharing the latest insights and discoveries in this rapidly progressing field. The scientific program will focus on translational testing of the latest advances towards next generation therapies in regenerative medicine including:

natural & synthetic biomaterial scaffolds
controlling the cellular microenvironment

Workshops are sessions intended to convey specific knowledge or skills; they are not intended for the presentation of research papers. Workshops are frequently more interactive and informal than sessions within the formal scientific program, and often involve extended discussion.

Special Sessions provide an opportunity for presentations or extended dialogue and exchanges beyond what is usually possible in the regular scientific sessions. Remote Sensing of Terrestrial Carbon Fluxes and Vegetation Biophysical Properties

Special Paper Session for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG)

The estimation of carbon fluxes between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere has important scientific and political implications. Remote sensing has proven a valuable tool for directly or indirectly estimating terrestrial carbon fluxes at landscape, regional, continental, and global scales. Remote sensing is also effective in estimating vegetation biophysical properties including vegetation biomass, leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover, and phenology that are explicitly used for estimating ecosystem carbon fluxes in empirical approaches or process-based biogeochemistry models.

This session will focus on the use of remote sensing data and techniques for estimating ecosystem carbon fluxes and vegetation biophysical properties at various spatial and temporal scales. This session will include, but not limited to, the following topics:

(1) Scaling-up site-level measurements on ecosystem carbon fluxes (e.g., eddy covariance measurements) to regional or continental scales using remote sensing data;

(2) Quantifying ecosystem carbon fluxes at landscape, regional, or continental scales using remote sensing data and techniques;

(3) Detecting land use/land cover change, disturbances (e.g., fires, and insect defoliation), and extreme climate events (e.g., droughts) and understanding their impacts on regional carbon budgets by combining remote sensing and other techniques;

(4) Estimating vegetation biophysical properties including vegetation biomass, LAI, fractional vegetation cover, and vegetation phenology at landscape, regional, or continental scales using optical or microwave remote sensing.

We also encourage submissions simulating ecosystem carbon fluxes at regional or continental scales using empirical or biogeochemistry models driven by remote sensing data (e.g., vegetation indices, LAI, vegetation phenology).

Announcing the First ESA Millennium Conference - Call for Proposals

The Governing Board of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) invites proposals for the first ESA Millennium Conference. The new Millennium Conference Series provides ESA members the opportunity to organize special conferences highlighting emerging, exciting ideas in ecology with the endorsement and support of the Society.

The target date for this first Millennium Conference is early 2009, with subsequent conferences annually thereafter.

Millennium Conferences will typically last 3 to 5 days and may include plenary sessions, parallel presentation sessions, posters, and workshop style discussions. The target number of participants should be 60 to 100, including 15 to 20 graduate students. Each conference will be expected to produce at least one peer-reviewed publication, and additional products intended for policy or educational use should be strongly considered.

Approved conferences will receive logistical support from ESA Headquarters, and the Governing Board has committed $50,000 from the Millennium Fund to support the first conference.

The Millennium Series is intended to address high-visibility issues of wide interest in the science community. Organizers are encouraged to work across disciplinary boundaries, engage compelling speakers, and produce high-quality publications.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON IRIDESCENCE

The School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University is pleased to announce an integrative 4-day conference on iridescent colors in nature, entitled '*Iridescence: More than Meets the Eye'. This *is a graduate student initiated and organized conference that aims to connect diverse groups of researchers to catalyze cross-disciplinary discussions on iridescent coloration in nature, identify new avenues of research, and explore the potential for iridescence to provide novel insights in fields as divergent as materials science, sexual selection and primary science education. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - Plant & Animal Genome XVI Conference

You are invited to attend the Plant & Animal Genome XVI Conference (PAG-XVI), January 12-16, 2008 taking place at the Town & Country Convention Center in San Diego, California. This is a call for abstracts and pre-registration.

Everyone who submits an abstract is required to pay the registration fee prior to the meeting to be included in the Final Abstract Guide and posted on the website. You must be registered by December 1, or your abstract will NOT be printed or posted on the website.

A new 40,000 sq. ft. Grand Exhibit Hall will be available for posters, exhibits, and coffee breaks; it's connected to the Atlas Foyer.

The meeting will again offer the satellite sessions and workshops which took place at Plant & Animal Genome XV. There will be over 100 technical, industry, and computer training workshops. 11th ICRS Mini-Symposium 20: Modeling concepts & processes on coral reefs

We would like to invite you to participate in Mini-Symposium 20, "Modeling concepts & processes on coral reefs", being held at the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 7-11 July 2008.

The 11th ICRS science program will address scientific questions within the framework of a series of Mini-Symposia developed to address problems and issues on contemporary coral reefs and assist management to sustain future reefs. The central theme for the 11th ICRS is "REEFS FOR THE FUTURE." The Symposium goals are to provide a scientific basis for coral-reef ecosystem management by articulating the state of the science with respect to current and emerging stressors; improve the understanding of reef condition, function, and productivity; and grow the fields of coral-reef ecosystem science, conservation, and multidisciplinary research by facilitating the exchange of ideas.

Key topics and questions for the "Modeling concepts & processes on coral reefs" session include, but are not limited to

1) What are the key biophysical and socioeconomic processes that can effectively predict trajectories of decline, stasis, or recovery of coral reefs?

2) How can biophysical and socio-economic processes be coupled to model the future of reefs?

3) What conceptual, qualitative, analytical, or numerical models are currently available to link improved coastal management with changes in coral reefs?

4) What are the trade-offs between simpler and more complex (e.g., data rich) models and algorithms for better understanding of key ecological processes and for applications to conservation planning?

If you would be interested in participating in an organized oral session (see http://esa.org/milwaukee/oosp_call2008.php ) on phenology at next August's annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America, please let me know. If there is enough interest, David Inouye and I will try to organize a session on the topic. Note that the theme of the meeting is Enhancing Ecological Thought by Linking Research and Education, and proposals (and talks) that relate to that theme are especially encouraged.

The ESA meeting will take place August 3-8, 2008 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

We invite proposals for organized oral sessions for the 93rd ESA Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held from August 3 8, 2007 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin at the Midwest Airline Center.

Organized oral sessions are organized around a specific topic with most of the speakers invited by the organizer. These sessions are distinguished from symposia in that 1) there is less emphasis on breadth of appeal and overall synthesis; 2) they may be comprised largely of related case studies; 3) talks are set at 15 minutes each, with 5 minutes following for discussion (as in contributed oral sessions); and 4) at least 2 time slots out of the 10 available in an organized oral session are reserved for placing related talks from the contributed abstracts by the Program Chair. Organized oral sessions are limited to half-day sessions (3 hours long); full-day organized oral sessions will not be considered. Proposals may be from any area of ecology, but those that relate to the overall theme Enhancing Ecological Thought by Linking Research and Education are especially encouraged. We also welcome proposals that explore interdisciplinary connections with areas of social and natural science outside of ecology or that relate to ecological education at any level.

Measuring Landcover Change and its Impact on Endangered Species

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

This one-week advanced GIS and remote sensing course provides conservationists with an opportunity to learn how GIS and remote sensing can be used to assess the conservation status of endangered species. Participants will be provided with their own desktop computer for all lab exercises. During the hands-on exercises participants will use the Internet, ArcMap, ArcMap Spatial Analyst, ERDAS Imagine, Fragstats, and other spatial analysis programs. Instructors will lead participants step-by-step through the process of:

* conducting a regional conservation assessment using GIS to determine critical conservation areas for an endangered species
* acquiring multi-date satellite imagery to quantify land cover change and to map the extent of the remaining habitat
* using landscape analysis to determine optimal landscape configurations for conserving the endangered species.

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park's Conservation and Research Center is offering the following introductory conservation GIS and remote sensing course:

GIS & REMOTE SENSING FOR WILDLIFE MANAGERS An Introduction to the use of Geographic Information Systems & Remote Sensing in Conservation and Wildlife Management

Date: October 15-19, 2007.

Increasingly, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing - the mapping of features using imagery acquired either from an aircraft or a satellite - have become important tools for decision-making and the applied management of natural resources. Many federal agencies and NGOs rely on GIS and satellite data for their work and are starting to produce their own spatial databases. However, there are few training opportunities for wildlife managers to learn the applications of GIS in everyday management situations. We are offering a course for wildlife managers that provides hands-on experience in collection of data, GIS analysis of data, and map-making using the latest ESRI (ArcGIS) and ERDAS software.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This short course will provide wildlife managers and conservation professionals with a working knowledge about the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing to the monitoring and management of wildlife and forest vegetation.

Exercises in establishing locations with a Global Positioning System (GPS), data input into a GIS, and spatial analysis techniques for GIS will provide hands-on and real world experience during the course.

Based on examples about habitat selection in songbirds and white-tailed deer, course participants will learn how to:

* Collect GIS data in the field using survey techniques and GPS.
* Differentially correct GPS data.
* Input GPS data into GIS.
* Input field data into GIS.
* Use GIS for management of large data sets from multiple sources.
* Design and perform analysis using GIS data and spatial analysis techniques.
* Integrate data with ancillary data, such as satellite imagery, aerial photography, and government agency databases.

B17: Observing, Analyzing, and Modeling Phenologies at Multiple Scales.

Phenology is the study of the timing of recurring biological and ecological events and the biotic and abiotic forces that influence the timing. Phenology is, in the words of Aldo Leopold, a "horizontal science" that cuts across and binds together multiple biological disciplines. It is a far-reaching but poorly understood and underutilized aspect of the environmental sciences. Phenologies come in many forms - the appearance of migratory species, the stages of crop development, and the onset of spring across the vegetated land surface, leaf fall in deciduous species, or growth and development of indicator species. The methods used to observe, analyze, and model these phenologies are diverse. With the advent of the National Phenology Network, the United States has for the first time a federal program designed to coordinate, collect, analyze, and disseminate phenological observations at multiple scales and across scientific and social disciplines. This centralized resource enables the integration of spatially-extensive phenological data and models with both short and long-term climatic forecasts to be used as a powerful agent for human adaptation to ongoing and future climate change. This session provides a meeting place for a multiplicity of approaches to phenological study to exchange data and information. We encourage researchers across disciplines and across the planet to contribute to this multidisciplinary session.

The session is sponsored by the Biogeosciences section and co-sponsored by the Atmospheric Sciences, Global Environmental Change, and Hydrology sections. This year marks the fourth in a series of phenology special sessions at the AGU Fall Meetings, and it promises to be an exciting forum to share knowledge as well as to learn about the newly emerging USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN).

Why a National Phenology Network for the USA? To fully capture the value of phenological data, a new resource is required to integrate networks of phenological observations, link with other relevant data sources, and provide access to tools to analyze these data at multiple scales. The USA-NPN is currently being designed and organized to engage federal agencies, environmental networks and field stations, educational institutions, and mass participation by citizen scientists.

AGU allows only one contributed presentation at the meeting (whether poster or talk). The deadline for submission of presentations is September 6. When you submit your abstract (online through <http://submissions3.agu.org/submission/entrance.asp>), be sure to select the Special Session entitled "Observing, Analyzing, and Modeling Phenologies at Multiple Scales". (At the moment, the session is assigned the code B17, but this code can change during the abstract submission period.)

In case you are not familiar with the AGU way, there is no guarantee at this stage that this special session will be allocated one or more oral sessions. Most of the presentations at AGU are posters and oral sessions are allocated proportionally to the number of abstracts submitted directly to that session. However, the track record for phenology sessions is good: one oral session in 2004; two oral sessions both in 2005 and 2006.

Occupancy Modeling: Using Detection Rates to Improve Wildlife Surveys

Who Should Attend: Researchers, students, and resource managers in state, county and federal land units who have an interest and need to collect presence/ absence or abundance data in the most cost-effective manner.

The presence or absence of a species across a set of landscape units is a fundamental concept used widely in ecology (e.g., as a monitoring metric and for inferences about species range or distribution, habitat modelling, resource selection probability functions, metapopulation dynamics, biodiversity and species co-occurrence). An important sampling issue, however, is that a species may not always be detected when present at a landscape unit. This will result in "false absences", causing parameter estimates to be biased if unaccounted for, frequently leading to misleading inferences, even with moderate levels of imperfect detection. This workshop will cover many of the latest methods for modeling patterns and dynamics of species occurrence in a landscape while accounting for the imperfect detection of the species. Participants will be introduced to available software through worked examples, and there will be special emphasis on aspects of study design. While primarily aimed at the beginner and intermediate level, more experienced researchers will also benefit from attending. Workshop notes will be provided, but the book 'Occupancy estimation and modeling: inferring patterns and dynamics of species occurrence' (MacKenzie et al. 2006) will be regularly referred to during the workshop and would be a useful workshop supplement.

Instructors: The course will be taught by three experienced instructors from USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Jim Nichols, Jim Hines, and Larissa Bailey.
Dates: all day September 13-14, 2007 (welcome meeting and reception on Sept. 12)
Location: Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center, Front Royal, Virginia. The Conservation and Research Center started primarily as a breeding center for endangered birds and mammals. Today, the black-footed ferret, Eld's deer, and several species of Pacific island birds are being bred to maintain genetic diversity and provide reserves for highly endangered species. The current priority for CRC's animal collection is veterinary and reproductive research. By living in controlled environments, the birds and mammals-most of them little-known and endangered-provide ideal subjects for intensive study and the rapid acquisition of urgently needed information. Findings from these studies provide critical information for the management of captive populations and valuable insights for the conservation and management of wild populations. Lodging: Lodging is available at CRC at $20 per night for Wednesday, 9/12 & Thursday, 9/13. Lodging consists of bunk beds in a dormitory style facility at the CRC. Bed linens supplied. Eighth International Long-Oligonucleotide Microarray Workshop

This workshop will comprise a combination of lectures and hand-on laboratory sessions. The participants will primarily employ Arabidopsis and maize (plant side) and human, bovine and porcine (animal side) whole genome 70-mer oligonucleotide microarrays in their laboratory work (for details of the plant arrays see http://www.ag.arizona.edu/microarray and http://www.maizearray.org/.

The workshop will be divided into two parts: Part I (Sunday 4PM to Wednesday 5PM) will cover wet-lab aspects of microarray target production and amplification, microarray hybridization, and scanning. Part II (all day, Thursday and Friday) will concentrate on data extraction, statistical analysis, and experimental design. Together these topics are aimed at the goal of the participants obtaining optimal results using oligonucleotide-based microarrays. Part II may be taken separately.

Specific topics to be covered include:

* Experimental design.
* Probe preparation and microarray printing.
* Microarray rehydration and probe immobilization.
* Target preparation, including RNA extraction, direct and indirect labeling, and amplification techniques.
* Microarray hybridization.
* Array scanning and data extraction.
* Data analysis and archiving.

Registration (Part I plus Part II) is $675, which includes costs of the microarrays and other supplies that you will use. Part II registration only is $275. Part I participants will be limited to 30 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Overall participation will be limited to 40 individuals.

Note: There are a number of airline connections from Tucson to San Diego on Friday evening, allowing workshop participants convenient access to the Plant and Animal Genome XVI Meeting (January 12-16).

Potentially dangerous environmental changes are happening in the atmosphere, oceans, animal habitats and places where hazardous materials are used, or have been discarded without adequate environmental protections. These increasing problems that also affect human health demand for interdisciplinary approaches where engineers, natural scientists, economists and computer scientists work together.

Information technology has become significant to all scientific groups and fields involved in environmental engineering: Model based systems which enable the study of environmental changes have been developed and are being extended to manage those environments. New paradigms for designing objects to enable easy disassembly and recovery of components contribute to reuse. Web-based information systems enhance public awareness to environmental changes and allow participation in decision making.

Developments in exploiting alternative energy sources are reducing dependence on non-renewable resources. Numerical economy-environment models contribute to cost-benefit analysis of environmental policy, and environmental monitoring and accounting systems facilitate market-based environmental regulation.

How can these developments be enhanced?

Further advance is going to be possible only if scientific teams have adequate experience, methods and tools for investigation of the changes in the environment. Success requires a high level of organization related to technical as well as scientific and human aspects of information handling.

The ITEE 2007 conference will provide a forum for exchanging information among environmental engineers, computer scientists and economists.

INVITATION

Dear Colleagues,

Food, nutrition, bio-energy, environment and livelihood are global concerns. Food security is determined by food availability, food access and is interlinked with livelihood. In order to feed the burgeoning populations of the world there is an urgent need to double cereal production by the year 2050. This increase will have to come from shrinking land, water and other natural resources. As per FAO reports about 800 million people are under nourished. To meet the UN Millennium Development Goal of reducing the number of hungry people to half by 2015, there is a need to bridge the huge gap between attainable yield and average yields harvested by the farmers especially in developing countries under fragile environments. Improved technologies can bridge these gaps. In that context, the research needs to be directed on sustainable agriculture including better soil, water management, crop production, crop protection, crop improvement through conventional plant breeding and use of molecular biology and biotechnology for removing the physiological constraints on present crop yield ceilings.

Integrated farming system, agro-processing and renewable energy, are essential both to meet food production targets for increasing food and nutritional security, poverty alleviation and thus livelihood security on sustainable basis. Besides, the ruthless exploitation of natural resources coupled with increasing industrialization especially in developing world is leading to the energy crises. The green house gas emissions are further deteriorating the clean environment and contributing to global warming. Therefore, search for alternative and renewable bio-energy sources is a major global concern.

Globalization of economies and liberalization of trade under WTO regime have economic, ecological, ethical, social and technological dimensions. For sustainable development and livelihood security, development of economic and social infrastructure along with congenial policy reforms is equally important. Also, participatory research and knowledge management with farming communities using information technology needs strengthening to enhance productivity and income per hectare on an environmentally sustainable basis.

The main objective of this conference is to deliberate on issues relating to crop improvement for higher physiological efficiency, better management of natural resources and bio energy for minimizing environmental impacts , cost-return equilibrium and agro- enterprises for sustainable growth in agriculture and overall agrarian prosperity for food and livelihood security globally.

State of Madhya Pradesh, in central India, has varied climatic conditions, vegetation bio-diversity and socio-economic-cultural strata. Thus it provides appropriate location for the International Conference. Also, the Society for Sustainable Agriculture and Resource Management (SSARM) is engaged globally in creating awareness about needs of and strategies for sustainable agriculture. Participation of scientists, policy makers, NGOs, farmers and entrepreneurs from India and abroad is solicited. Also, support from national and international research and development organizations is highly solicited.

Poster Presentation:

Poster (1x1.2 m) stating title, name and address of the author (s), short introduction, method and material and results and conclusions. Awards for best poster presentation will be given under each theme.

Accommodation: University Guest Houses, Hotels in the town.

Visits, Excursion and Cultural Programme: Visits to the University research farm particularly Medicinal Plants Research Area and Exhibition. Excursion to nearby Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat, National Parks, Khajuraho Temple. Cultural programme based on folk lore's, folk dances etc.

About Jabalpur: Jabalpur is an educational hub of the state of Madhya Pradesh is situated on the bank of the holy river Narmada which was the capital of Gond king during 12th century and was later seat of the Kalchuri dynasty. Well connected by road, rail and air, it is situated on national highway No. 7 (280 Km from Nagpur) and 12 (294 Km from Bhopal) respectively. By rail it is on the Mumbai (Varanasi-Patna-Howrah-Guwahati) route between Itarsi and Allahabd junctions. Direct trains to New Delhi, Pune, Nagpur, Kota, Lucknow, Chhattishgarh, Gujrat and southern states are also available. By air it is connected with a daily flight from New Delhi via Bhopal (Air Deccan) arrival (8.50) and departure (9.10 hours), departing New Delhi (5.55) and arriving (12.05) hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures during the month of February vary in the range of 27°C to 30°C and 10°C to 13°C respectively.

Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat: Soaring in glittering splendour, the Mrble Rocks at Bhedaghat rise to a hundred feet on either side of the Narmada. The serene loveliness of the scene is one of cool quiet, the sunlight sparkling on the marble-white pinnacles and casting dappled shadows on the pellucid waters. These white rocks with views of black and dark green volcanic seams are truly majestic, and produce a magical effect on moonlit nights. The holy river flows by tranquilly flanked by the towering cliffs which reflect in it like a mirror the changing moods of nature. A little distance away, it becomes turbulent as it plunges in a mighty water fall known as Dhuandhar.

Eternal Expressions of Love: The architectural style of the Khajuraho temples is very different from the temple prototype of that period. Each stands, instead of within the customary enclosure, on a high masonry platform. Combined with the upward direction of the structure, which is further accentuated by vertical projections, the total effect is one of grace and lightness, reminiscent of the Himalayan peaks.

Verdant Jewel of the Hills: Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's most verdant jewel, a place where nature has found exquisite expression in myriad enchanting ways. Green shades embrace the mountains, and everywhere is heard the gentle murmur of flowing water. Bridle paths lead into tranquil forest glades, groves of wild bamboo and jamun, dense sal forests and delicate bamboo thickets.

Complementing the magnificence of nature are the works of man; Pachmarhi is also an archaeological treasure-house. In cave shelters in the Mahadeo Hills is an astonishing richness in rock paintings.

Masterpieces of Buddhist Art: Sanchi is known for its Stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D. The most famous of these monuments, the Sanchi Stupa 1, was originally built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, the then governor of Ujjayini. A Chunar sandstone pillar fragment, shining with the proverbial Mauryan polish, lies near Stupa I and carries the famous edict of Ashoka warning against schism in the Buddhist community.

National Park with a Rich Historical Past: This is a small National Park; compact, yet full of game. The density of the Tiger population at Bandhavgarh is the highest known in India. This is also White Tiger country.

The mission of UNEP is "provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations."

For cities to be sustainable they must integrate environmental stewardship, economic development and the well being of all people – not just for today but for countless generation to come. According to International Institute for sustainable Development (ISSD) this is the challenge facing governments, non governmental organizations, private enterprises, communities and individuals.

By the year 2015, all 191 UN member states pledge to meet the following Millennium Development Goals: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development.

The environmental quality enhancement can take place only with proper urban planning and it is necessary for all professionals to come together and participate actively in the challenges of urban planning. The theme of the conference is to understand issues related urban planning, health and environment.

The conference aims to tackle some of the major issues related to environment and urban planning, Coastal regulations and strike a balance between environmental degradation and metropolitan growth.

Submit Abstract

Abstracts are invited consisting of original research findings and comprehensive reviews on the above areas. Preference will be given for those papers that contain information which are applicable in national development.

The abstract should not exceed 250 words. Abstracts will be refereed and those selected will be published in symposium proceedings. Authors of the papers will be requested to present them in full at the symposium.

Abstract, typed in Microsoft Word should be submitted, with title and name(s) of the author(s) using the submission form below. All correspondence will be addressed to the principal author by email.

The deadline for submission of abstracts was 27th October 2006 23:59 Sri Lankan Time (GMT + 05:30). Now the deadline is over, and our review panel is reviewing the papers..

The participants should register on or before the 15th November 2006. Registration fee will entitle the copy of the symposium proceedings, meals, accommodation and refreshments during the symposium.

About ERE

Managing Environmental Systems and Human-Environment interactions is imperative in today's society. Such management requires integrated multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration.

The Environment Research Event (ERE) began 10 years ago at the University of Queensland, as a means for postgraduate students to present their research to fellow students, senior academics and industry partners in a relaxed environment. In 1997 this research event went national and has since evolved to incorporate international delegates. ERE provides researchers and environmental professionals a unique opportunity for networking, and to observe and discuss the development of research in the environmental, engineering, economic and social sciences fields.

This year the Environmental Research Event celebrates its 10th anniversary with around 150 delegates expected to attend, from the Australia-Pacific region. This year's theme "Environment - Working Together" aims to promote collaborative research and a multidisciplinary approach to environmental management, recognising that we will all need to work together to solve our most pressing environmental problems.

* The student fee applies to students registered for a full-time higher degree and must be accompanied by a signed letter from your head of department attesting to student status. This rate is not applicable to post-doctoral students.

Author Registration Deadline

Accepted oral and poster presenters should register no later than September 15, 2006 to ensure that their material is included in the final program and the book of abstracts. The presentations of non-registered authors will be withdrawn from the conference after this date. Please include your abstract reference number when completing your registration form.

Payment

Registration fees are payable in advance of the Conference. In order to expedite the registration process, please complete the registration form with your credit card details. Confirmation of your credit card payment along with registration confirmation documents will be sent to you by mail. If you do not receive confirmation of your registration 7 days prior to the event, please contact the Conference Secretariat.

Alternative payment methods

Cheques should be made payable to Elsevier Ltd. and should be sent with your completed registration form. In order to pay by bank transfer, you will first require an invoice. An invoice will be sent to you by airmail upon receipt of a signed registration form completed with your contact details and registration details. The reverse side of the invoice provides Elsevier bank account details for transfer purposes. Please do not transfer fees until you have received your invoice. It is essential that you include your invoice number when instructing your bank. Please forward a copy of the bank transfer documentation to the Conference Secretariat.

Cancellations

Substitutions may be made at any time but please advise the Conference Secretariat of a change of name. If you find it necessary to cancel the registration completely, please notify the Conference Secretariat immediately in writing. Provided written notice is received by October 23, 2006, a full refund will be given less a 10% administration charge. Provided written notice is received by November 6, 2006 a 50% refund will be given. It is regretted for registrations cancelled after November 6 2006, or for no-shows at the Conference, the full fee (100% cancellation charge) will be payable.

In the unlikely event that Elsevier shall deem it necessary to cancel the Conference, all pre-paid registration fees will be reimbursed. Elsevier shall not be liable for reimbursing the cost of travel or accommodation arrangements made by individual delegates. For more information please visit the ISEI5 FAQ section.

Elsevier reserves the right to change any session in the final program.
